Teens buy less music

NPD Group, an entertainment industry analyst company reported teens were acquiring less music.

There were three main reasons cited as to why kids purchased fewer downloads in 2008:
- 32% of teens were unhappy with the selections available.
- 23% claim to already have a suitable collection of digital music
- 24% cite cutting back all entertainment spending

Free downloads have also been affected. The number of tracks downloaded from peer-to-peer networks fell 6% in 2008 and the number of teens borrowing music (burning a CD, ripping a computer, etc.) dropped 28%. CD purchases fell 26% year-over-year and paid digital downloads dropped 13%.

Teens however are turning to online and satellite radio. 52% listened to online radio in 2008, up from 34% in 2007. Teens listening to satellite radio rose 63% year-over-year (from 19% to 31%).
