Vitrue, a social media marketing firm, released The Vitrue 100 - Top Social Brands of 2008. Last year, the company launched SMI (Social Media Index) which was designed to capture a brand’s share of voice on the social web.
The Vitrue 100 helps bring credibility and clarity to this emerging space, in addition to help define who is winning, who could be doing better and provides the industry with overall trends. Each day, Vitrue analyzes the online conversations on a variety of social networking, blogging, microblogging, photo and video sharing sites, then calculateing scores about brand’s social conversations. After applying a series of algorithms to reflect the frequency of usage, the size of the social media environment, and the magnitued of the conversation, each brand is allocated a single numeric score.
Here are the Top 10:
1. iPhone
2. CNN
3. Apple
4. Disney
5. Xbox
6. Starbucks
7. iPod
8. MTV
9. Sony
10. DELL
Only a few restaurant chains made the list. Starbucks lead them making a respectable # 6, followed by: McDonald’s who came at # 32, Subway at # 40, Wendy’s at # 56, Burger King at # 57, Chili’s at # 88 and Taco Bell at # 96.
Since this is the first time this list was released, it will be interesting to see which brands will step up their game and turn their advertising efforts into the fastest growing media today: social media.

Top ten: looks like a lot of technology, a not very good cup of coffee and some family entertainment. Oh, that and some very sizeable marketing budgets of course…
large marketing budgets is the key, but, isn’t social media pretty much free?
