NPD/CREST, a consumer report data released their top lists of foods and beverages among kids ages 6 and under and also 6 and older. These reports are based on actual items purchased, not necessarily based on likes or dislikes.
For kids under 6 years old, these were the top 5 items:
1. Pasta
2. French Fries
3. Non-Fried Vegetables
4. Chicken nugget / strips
5. Rice
As far as what kids under 6 years old like to drink, the following were listed as top 5:
1. Milk
2. Carbonated soft drinks (soda/pop)
3. Juice
4. Non-carbonated soft drinks
5. Iced Tea
The report also listed what kids ages 6-12 years old purchased more:
1. Pasta
2. French Fries
3. Pizza
4. Nuggets/Strips
5. Rice
When it came to drinks, this age group went with:
1. Carbonated Drinks (pop/soda)
2. Milk
3. Non-carbonated soft drinks
4. Iced Tea
5. Diet carbonated soft drinks
While pasta, french fries and nuggets are all items we are not too surprised to make the list, attention should be paid to newcomers: rice and non-fried vegetables. This is an indicator that kids (probably based on mom’s attitudes towards obesity and a healthy diet) eating habits are changing and evolving. Since milk is top rated as well, I wish the report would break it down by percentages of skim milk, 2% or whole.
